Our hike was on a trail within the Arenal Volcano National Park, which winds through the rainforest at the volcano’s base. The path itself was moderately easy, you know, a bit of an incline here and there but nothing too strenuous, really. Our group walked over old lava flows from past eruptions, which was literally like walking on a piece of history. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, pointing out colorful toucans in the trees and, at one point, a whole family of howler monkeys, which was just completely amazing. Okay, so after a good couple of hours of walking and sweating, there is literally no better reward than dipping into natural hot springs. The tour usually includes entry to one of the area’s famous thermal resorts, and ours was basically a tropical paradise. The water is naturally heated by the volcano’s geothermal activity, and it’s filled with minerals that are supposed to be great for you. Frankly, I just cared that it felt incredible on my tired muscles. The resort had a bunch of different pools, some hot and some a little cooler, all sort of surrounded by these stunning, lush gardens with waterfalls. It’s almost too perfect, sitting in the warm water with a drink in your hand, just looking up at the volcano in the distance. Well, a full day of adventuring is obviously going to make you hungry. The tour thankfully includes a stop for a typical Costa Rican lunch, which is often a “casado.” Basically, it’s a full plate of food with rice, beans, a choice of meat or fish, salad, and fried plantains. It’s simple, delicious, and gives you a real taste of the local food culture, which is just what you need. On our way back toward San Jose, the tour made another stop in the artisan town of Sarchí. This town is seriously famous for its brightly painted oxcarts, which are a national symbol of Costa Rica. We got to see craftspeople at work, painting the intricate designs by hand. It’s a pretty nice cultural break from all the nature stuff, giving you a sort of well-rounded view of the country. I mean, you get a little bit of everything on this tour, pretty much.

Packing List and Practical Tips for Your Trip

So, if you’re going on this trip, you kind of need to pack smart to be comfortable all day. It’s a long day, and the weather can change a bit between the highlands and the volcano area. Obviously, you’ll have a much better time if you have the right stuff with you. Based on our experience, here’s a quick list of things you should definitely bring.

What We Recommend Bringing:

• Comfortable Walking Shoes: This is a definite must. The volcano trail is uneven, so sneakers or light hiking shoes are really your best bet.
• Swimsuit and Towel: You know, for the hot springs! Most resorts rent towels, but bringing your own is sort of easier.
• A Change of Clothes: Seriously, you’ll want dry clothes to put on after the hot springs for the drive back to San Jose.
• Light Rain Jacket: The weather in the rainforest is just a little unpredictable. A light jacket will come in handy if there’s a sudden shower.
• Insect Repellent: You’re in the tropics, so mosquitos are pretty much a given, especially around dusk.
• Sunscreen and a Hat: The Costa Rican sun is seriously strong, even on cloudy days.
• Camera or Smartphone: Okay, you absolutely want to capture the views of the volcano and the wildlife. A waterproof case is a pretty good idea too.
• Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is incredibly important, so you should keep a bottle with you that you can refill.
